Beers of the World

One man's quest to conquer the world (of beer)

England

England

Newcastle Brown Ale

Brewery: Heineken UK
Style: Brown Ale
ABV: 4.5%
Country number: 20
Bought at: Backstage in Stavanger, Norway
Date: 29/11/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.50

Another week of revisits and another week of some explanation. Just like last weeks entry from France this weeks entry from England is also the second beer from the country and not the first. The reason for this is that the first beer from England registered on Untappd was San Miguel brewed by Carlsberg UK. As I had this at a local bar here in Stavanger I’m not 100% sure if it was brewed in England or Spain. I have therefor chosen to use Newcastle Brown Ale as my entry for crossing England of the list. This beer was also enjoyed at a local bar here in my hometown, namely Backstage.

The beer is dark brown in colour with a thin creamy head. It tastes sweet with hints of caramel and some slight bitterness towards the end. Roasty creamy feel as the taste fades away.

France

France

Kronenbourg 1664

Brewery: Brasseries Kronenbourg
Style: Lager
ABV: 5%
Country number: 19
Bought at: Alf & Werner in Stavanger, Norway
Date: 09/11/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.50

France is one of the countries where I actually use the second beer I had from that country for the list you can find if you click Europe above. The reason for this is that Desperados has been produced in both France and Netherlands and I can’t remember what it said on the bottle I had back when I was living in USA. When it comes to Kronenbourg 1664, which this blogentry is about, it suffers from the same Norwegian alcohol laws that I mentioned two weeks ago when revisiting Chang Classic. That means the Kronenbourg 1664 that you buy in Norwegian grocery stores is 4.5% while I’m currently enjoying the 5% version bought outside Norway.

The beer is golden in colour with a small white foam top. It tastes crisp and malty with a nice amount of sweetness to it. The sweetness lingers on throughout the finish.

Czech Republic

Czech Republic

Budweiser Budvar B:Original

Brewery: Budějovický Budvar
Style: Czech Pilsner
ABV: 5%
Country number: 18
Bought at: Arkivet Nattbar in Stavanger, Norway
Date: 26/10/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.75

Those of you who are eagle-eyed might notice that this weeks revisit was first enjoyed the day after last weeks revisit. Simple explanation is that after the birthdayparty mentioned in the blogentry about Chang we continued the night at Arkivet Nattbar and this beer was one of the ones I had after midnight.

The beer is dark golden in colour with a thin white foam lacing on top. It tastes crisp with a nice amount of malty bitterness. It ends with a nice round finish making it a very good czech pilsner.

Thailand

Thailand

Chang Classic

Brewery: Cosmos Brewery
Style: Lager
ABV: 5%
Country number: 17
Bought at: Somewhere in Stavanger, Norway
Date: 25/10/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.25

I am surprised about how many details I remember when I’m doing these revisits. This weeks revisit brings me back to a birthdayparty I attended where some of the beers I brought with me was a six pack of Chang Classic. I think the beers were bought at REMA 1000 but as I am not 100% sure I’ve simply listed it at somerwhere in Stavanger. As a sidenote I would like to mention that the Chang Classic sold in grocery stores in Norway is 4.2% due to Norwegian alcohol laws while the one I’m having while writing this blogentry is 5%.

The beer is clear golden in colour with a small white head. It has a slightly sour smell but tastes malty and just like most lagers. Slight hints of hopps lasts through the ending.

Denmark

Denmark

Tuborg Grøn

Brewery: Carlsberg
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.6%
Country number: 16
Bought at: Crazy in Bryne, Norway
Date: 04/10/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.25

Shortly after moving back home to Norway I visited a friend living in Klepp just south of Stavanger. Later that evening we decided to check out the nightlife in Bryne, the place we both studied at a couple of years earlier. We ended up at this place called Crazy and one of the beers they had there was the popular Tuborg Grøn. When I come to think about it Tuborg Grøn was probably one of the first beers that I drank when I was younger, way before the craft beer had entered the scene here in Norway.

The beer is light golden in colour with what I would describe as a normal white foam head. Is tastes mild with some bitterness from the malts and has a short and somewhat flat finish.

Norway

Norway

Lervig Lucky Jack

Brewery: Lervig Aktiebryggeri
Style: Pale Ale
ABV: 4.7%
Country number: 15
Bought at: Helgø Meny Øysenteret in Hundvåg, Norway
Date: 13/09/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.75

As I’ve been doing these revisits I’ve been reliving a lot of great memories from when I lived in Daytona Beach, USA. This weeks revisit brings me back to when I moved back to Stavanger in September 2014. Quite fittingly my first Norwegian beer registered on Untappd was the local Lervig Lucky Jack from the superb Lervig Aktiebryggeri. This beer is easily available all over Norway at most grocery stores.

The beer is dark golden in colour with a fluffy white head. It has a nice citrus taste with a hoppy finish.

Russia

Russia

Baltika 3 Classic

Brewery: Baltika Breweries
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.8%
Country number: 14
Bought at: World of Beer in Port Orange, USA
Date: 06/09/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.50

This week I’m back at doing revisits of one of the 43 beers I had before starting this blog. This beer brings us back to World of Beer but this time with a take-away beer. The reason for this is that I was close to reaching 100 different beers at World of Beer when I was about to move home to Stavanger from Daytona Beach. So to reach 100 I bought a couple of take-away beers from the bar to enjoy at home before moving home and this Russian beer was one of them.

The beer is golden in colour with an average amount of white foam. It tastes crisp and malty with a bit of a grainy feel towards the end. Smooth and very easy to drink.

Saudi Arabia

A8988132-C606-4C9D-A439-9A099720A32E

Hillsburg Regular

Brewery: Mahmood Saeed Beverage Industry
Style: Non-alcoholic
ABV: 0%
Country number: 113
Bought at: Bin Dawood in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Date: 29/07/2018
My Untappd rating: 1.00

After weeks with revisits I can FINALLY present you a new blogentry about beer from a new country, Saudi Arabia. I have recently started in a new job that brings me to Saudi Arabia. This is the only Saudi Arabian “beer” I’ve found so far as all the other non-alcoholic options are from outside Saudi Arabia.

The beer is dark golden in colour with a fast disappearing white head. The carbonation otherwise is also shortlived. It tastes very sweet but has a lager taste to it for a short period before the sweetness comes back. Not very good but atleast a whole lot better than the non-alcoholic beer from Iran.

Germany

Germany

Flensburger Gold

Brewery: Flensburger Brauerei
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.8%
Country number: 13
Bought at: World of Beer in Port Orange, USA
Date: 29/06/2014
My Untappd rating: 3.50

Third week in a row with a beer from the same visit at World of Beer. Not much to say about the story on how I got this. What I can mention is that for this revisit I got hold of it at Total Wine in Daytona Beach, USA when I visited, the place I called home for three years, last year.

The beer is clear golden in colour with a small amount of carbonation to it. It tastes crisp and malty with a hint of sweetness. A short and weak malty finish stops the rating from going any higher. An average lager from a country that has so many delicious lagers to choose from.
