Beers of the World

One man's quest to conquer the world (of beer)

Taybeh Beer Golden

Brewery: Taybeh Brewing Company
Style: Lager
ABV: 5%
Country number: 97
Bought at: Somewhere in Jerusalem, Israel. Thanks to Anders Simonsen!
Date: 13/01/2018
My Untappd rating: 2.75

This week I’m back with another beer that a friend of me brought with him home from a vacation to Israel, Palestine and Jordan last year. The first one was the pale ale from Jordan that I enjoyed a month ago.

The beer is golden in colour with a medium white head that lingers. It also has a solid amount of carbonation that lasts. This beer actually looks alot better than it tastes. It tastes malty but has a weird bitterness to it that is not to my liking. The same bitterness also stays into the aftertaste making it hard to really enjoy this rarity from Palestine.

Laško Zlatorog

Brewery: Pivovarna Laško
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.9%
Country number: 96
Bought at: Tommy Supermarket in Baška Voda, Croatia. Thanks to Andreas Wathne!
Date: 05/01/2018
My Untappd rating: 3.25

After accomplishing 52 new countries in 52 weeks last year it’s going to be hard to do anything near the same this year. But we start of 2018 just like 2017 with a new beer in week one. This beer is the last of three beers that I got from a friend when he visited Croatia last summer.

The beer is golden in colour with a solid white foam head. It tastes sweet and light with a normal amount of malty bitterness in the ending. A decent start to the new year.

Chinggis Mongolian Lager

Brewery: Chinggis Beer
Style: Lager
ABV: 5%
Country number: 95
Bought at: Haus der 131 Biere in Hamburg, Germany
Date: 30/12/2017
My Untappd rating: 3.50

We have come to the last week of the year and another beer is waiting. Country number 52 this year. I did it! When I started this blog back in January this year I had three main goals. Goal number one was to double the amount of countries I’ve had beer from. I started at 43 and reached 86 at the end of October. Goal number two was one new country every week and that goal is reached today. Goal number three is to reach 100 different countries and with nine more beers stored at home it looks like I’m reaching that goal in week 5 of 2018. Who knows what 2018 has in store. This beer is one of many that I got at Haus der 131 Biere in Hamburg back in October.

The beer is golden with a thin foam head on top. It tastes it light and sweet with a malty finish. A very light and easily drinkable lager.

As the year comes to an end I would like to thank everyone who has been following this blog throughout the year and a huge thanks to those who have contributed with beer. Happy New Year! 🙂

Diekirch Christmas

Brewery: Brasseries de Luxembourg Mousel Diekirch
Style: Christmas Beer
ABV: 5.1%
Country number: 94
Bought at: Saveur Bière in Lille, France and collected at ICA Supermarket Viksäng in Västerås, Sweden
Date: 23/12/2017
My Untappd rating: 3.50

Sometimes it feels like this blog writes itself and this is one of those entries. Throughout the year I’ve been in contact with several online beer shops. Some months ago I was in contact with Saveur Bière regarding some of the beers they had in stock. As usual Norway was not one of the countries available for shipping, but they very kindly mentioned that they were starting to ship to Sweden from November this year. Those of you who have followed this blog through the entire year might remember that some of the first beers on this blog was bought when I travelled to Sweden last year to renew my commercial pilot licence. Just like last year I once again went to Sweden earlier this month to renew the licences and this gave me the opportunity to order some beers from Saveur Bière. To make things even better I’m able to cross of another country with a festive Christmas Beer from Luxembourg.

The beer is dark brown in colour with a nice creamy head. It tastes sweet and malty without any special aftertaste. Sadly nothing special about this Christmas beer but atleast it is a Christmas beer. Merry Christmas!

Carakale Pale Ale

Brewery: Carakale Brewing Company
Style: Pale Ale
ABV: 6.5%
Country number: 93
Bought at: Somewhere in Aqaba, Jordan. Thanks to Anders Simonsen!
Date: 16/12/2017
My Untappd rating: 4.00

Two months ago a friend of me was on vacation in Israel, Palestine and Jordan. By now you probably know the rest of the story 😉 Of course I asked if he could bring with him some local beers and he did not disappoint. After having tasted a lot of lagers from different countries it is nice to finally try something different in form of this pale ale.

And this beer really delivers. The beer is hazy dark orange in colour with a tiny foam lining. It has a nice hoppy and fruity taste with a nicely balanced bitter finish. This is the 50. new country this year and so far the best one by quite a margin! !هتافات

Cisk Lager

Brewery: Simons Farsons Cisk
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.2%
Country number: 92
Bought at: Beers of Europe and shipped to a friend in Bursledon, England who then shipped it to Norway. Huge thanks to Aleksander Flinkop!
Date: 08/12/2017
My Untappd rating: 3.50

A couple of months ago I noticed that Beers of Europe had received a limited supply of Cisk Lager from Malta. As Malta is one of the countries I haven’t had beer from this of course cought my attention. The problem was that I didn’t have any plans on visiting England in the near future. Luckily for me a very close friend of mine recently moved to England and said yes to have the package shipped to him so that he could then ship it to me here in Norway. Hats off and cheers to you Aleksander! 🙂

The beer is light golden in colour with a normal white foam head and a lasting carbonation. It tastes crisp and fresh with a grainy and malty bitterness. A good tasting lager and a huge step up from last week.

Brewery: Arpanoosh Industrial Company
Style: Non-alcoholic
ABV: 0%
Country number: 91
Bought at: Supermarket Persepolis in Hamburg, Germany
Date: 01/12/2017
My Untappd rating: 0.25

After I started this blog I allways stop by different foreign  supermarkets when I’m out travelling, especially Asian and African supermarkets. This was how I found some of the first beers for this blog when travelling to Copenhagen last December, and this is also how I found this weeks beer when travelling to Hamburg earlier this year. Iran is one of those countries in the world where alcohol is banned and I therefor had to settle for a non-alcoholic beer.

The beer is brown in colour. It starts of tasting sweet before quickly moving over to a bittersweet malty taste and ends of on a weird taste that makes it nearly impossible to drink for me. Took a couple of sips to cross of another country but nothing more…

Republic of the Congo

Republic of the Congo

Stärk Premium Beer

Brewery: Brasseries et Limonaderies du Congo
Style: Lager
ABV: 5.1%
Country number: 90
Bought at: Radisson Blu M’Bamou Palace Hotel in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Thanks to Tom Vika!
Date: 25/11/2017
My Untappd rating: 2.75

This week I’m reaching yet another milestone on this blog, country number 90! To mark this I’m having a beer that I wouldn’t be able to get without help from a good friend from flight school in Florida. He is currently flying all across the world on a Boeing 747 and one of the places he’s been to is the Republic of the Congo. Since he gave me the beer a couple of weeks ago I’ve been communicating with Untappd regarding some errors. First of Untappd didn’t even have the Republic of the Congo listed as a country, second of was the fact that both the main breweries from the Republic of the Congo was listed to be from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Untappd was quick to add the country once it was pointed out to them but editing the origin of the two breweries are still pending. Therefor when I checked the beer in it is listed under the Democratic Republic of the Congo instead of the Republic of the Congo.

The beer is golden in colour with a nice amount of foam and carbonation. It tastes sweet with a bitter portion in the middle before ending on the sweet side again. Not the worst beer from Africa so far but also far from the best, just ok…

Birra Peja

Brewery: Birra Peja
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.2%
Country number: 89
Bought at: Somewhere in Pejë, Kosovo. Thanks to Dennis Muminovic!
Date: 18/11/2017
My Untappd rating: 3.00

Some of the beers supplied for this blog comes from friends who’s been kind to buy beer for me when traveling all across the globe. Without them I wouldn’t be anywhere close to country number 89 that I cross of the list this week. When a good friend from my footballteam traveled to his hometown of Pejë in Kosovo this summer I was quick to ask him for a local beer. Not only is it a local beer from his hometown but also the most popular beer in Kosovo.

The beer is clear golden in colour with little to no foam head. It tastes like your standard lager with a hint of sweetness before ending with a malty taste.
